Community Memorial Hospital Recognizes Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month with Expanded Access to Surgical Care

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and Community Memorial (CMH) encourages individuals to prioritize their health by scheduling recommended screenings and learning the warning signs of colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when detected early through routine screening. According to health reports published in January, colorectal cancer rates and deaths have been increasing among adults under 50 — even as other cancer mortality declines — making awareness and early detection more important than ever. These recent findings underscore the trend of rising colorectal cancer incidence in younger adults and the need for education and proactive care.

The American Cancer Society recommends that adults at average risk begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45. Those with a family history or other risk factors may need to begin earlier. Screening options include colonoscopies, stool-based tests, and flexible sigmoidoscopy. Patients are encouraged to talk with their primary care provider about which screening option is right for them.

“Knowing the signs can help patients reduce their risk of any future or larger concerns,” stated Dr. Gregory Ripich, General Surgeon of the CMH Center for Surgical Services.  “While early colorectal cancer may not cause symptoms, warning signs can include changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, and persistent abdominal discomfort.”

To support colon health and reduce risk, eat a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and limit red and processed meats. It’s also important to exercise regularly, avoid tobacco use, and limit alcohol consumption. Maintaining a healthy weight is also vital in supporting colon health.

For patients who require further evaluation or surgical treatment, the Community Memorial General Surgery team provides expert, compassionate care with fast appointment availability. With convenient clinic locations throughout the region, the team offers colonoscopy procedures, diagnostic evaluation, minimally invasive surgical options, and ongoing follow-up care.

“Our goal is to remove barriers to care,” said Dr. Nils-Tomas McBride, General Surgeon of the CMH Center for Surgical Services. “By offering appointments in multiple locations with quick access, we’re making it easier for patients to get screened, ask questions, and receive timely treatment.”

Take action this March; Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder that screening saves lives. Patients age 45 or older—or younger with risk factors—should schedule a screening now as early detection saves lives.
